Modernization has added an omniscient tool in almost everyone’s life. Today’s generation has a keen interest in electronic devices that mobile technology has accepted in recent years. They spent more than 5 hours a day on smartphones whether for playing, maintaining social lives, or doing any productive tasks.    

I agree that electronic gadgets have made our lives simpler and work more efficiently and productively but we all are well aware of “Excess of anything is harmful”.

The number of hours we spend on smartphones leads to drastic results on health. 

For the past few years, the complaints of pain, discomfort, and deformity in the little finger are exceeding due to holding the weight of a smartphone for prolonged hours.

You keep your hands glued to your phone’s screen while texting, tweeting, emailing, and managing your social lives causes your thumb and fingers to be over-used. 

Repetitive strains insidiously lead to hypermobility of smaller joints which sequentially results in tightness or the stiffness of the structures around joints.   

 Surgeons suggest smartphones pinky finger deformity can be a transient result of excessive use of handheld gadgets but if overlooked these repetitive manners may lead to the onset of osteoarthritis with cartilage degeneration.

Some conditions might mimic similar difficulties with fingers.

  • Dupuytren’s Contracture 

A hand deformity is caused by the gradual thickening and tightening of soft tissues under the skin.

  • Clinodactyly

A congenital condition affecting 3% of newborns. Fingers are abnormally curved, it overlaps with other fingers.

  • Spinster’s Claw 

Also known as claw hand and is caused by damage to the ulnar nerve causing weakness or paralysis of lumbricals.

 

 7 PAIN ALLEVIATING TIPS

  1. Try to avoid cell phones too frequently, use it when necessary for shorter intervals.
  2. Avoid gaming on handheld gadgets as it consumes long hours unattended.
  3. Take a small break before your hands show signs of discomfort.
  4. If your hand is hurting, stretch your fingers, wrist, and forearms twice with the hold time of 10 seconds.
  5. You can start using the swipe feature of the keyboard or speech.
  6. Switch your hands at periodic intervals, so that the weight of the device can be distributed and shifted.
  7. If you start experiencing pain, then use a cold pack over hand twice a day for 15 min and OTC pain reliever in extreme cases to reduce swelling.
