Overview
The shoulder joint considered as ball and socket joint, in which the socket is the glenoid fossa of the scapula that is quite shallow, small and ball is the head of the humerus. The socket of shoulder joint is deepend by a fibrocartilagenous structure that is known as Glenoid Labrum, provides static stability to shoulder joint(glenohumeral joint) and also acts as a shock absorber. A tear to glenoid labrum usually occur due to any athletic activity or any trauma.


What are the causes?
Injury to the shoulder rim occur due to acute trauma or repetitive shoulder motion. some of the causes which leads you to glenoid labrum tears are-
-Fall on an outstretched hand

-Any direct blow to your shoulder
-A sudden pull to your shoulder when you are trying to lift a heavy object as in weightlifting and gymnastics.
-Any overhead activity that cause trauma to your glenoid rim
Risk Factors!
If you are having any prior shoulder dislocation you are at risk of having tear in your labrum.
Age- Your cartilage becomes more brittle with age and that’s why become more prone to tear away from shoulder.
What are the symptoms?
-Catching, locking and popping sensations in your shoulder
– Pain with overhead activities
-Your shoulder range of motion is decreased
– You also have shoulder weakness, instability and stiffness
How to diagnose?
A physical examination will include testing of shoulder ROM by goniometer, instability, pain and tenderness and ask about the symptoms.

CT scan , MRI and X-Ray to be done to investigate the tears.
Treatment!
Patients with labrum tears are advised to ice the shoulder and rest it for 6 weeks in a sling so that laburm gets time to reattach itself and regain its strength so that provide stability and absorbs shock.
Ultrasound , LASER and TENS therapy to be done to reduce pain and inflammation.
Gentle, Passive and active assisted ROM exercises to be performed till six weeks.
After six weeks, start with active ROM exercises along with stretching and mobilization exercise.
Start performing strengthening exercises after 12 weeks to strengthen your shoulder muscles.
