A ganglion is a sac like swelling or cyst of synovial membrane generally found on outer surface of your wrist. It may appears at the other sites also i.e in the palm of the hand, upper surface of foot and the outer side of knee. In appearance, ganglion is a rounded swelling which develops gradually. Some ganglia disappears spontaneously and may not give you any trouble unless situated in a part which is subjected to pressure.

What are the causes?
Most of the ganglion are idiopathic i.e whose cause is not known, and can be cause due to trauma to the wrist, capsule or tendon sheath, the synovium may herniate to form a ganglion cyst.
Risk Factors!!
– Your Sex and Age- women of age group 20-40 years of age are at high risk of developing ganglion.
– Osteoarthritis- People who have wear and tear arthritis at joints may develop ganglion cysts at your joint sites.
What are the clinical features?
*You have visible swelling over the outer or inner surface of wrist, the swelling is tense, tender and fixed to the deep tissues and not to the overlying skin
*Your swelling may be fluctuant in nature i.e it felt you sometime and disappears other time.
*Dorsal ( outer surface) ganglion are most visible when your wrist is in bent position
*Pain- ganglion are generally painless, but it cause pain to you when it presses any of your nerve which might cause you pain, tingling and numbness
*Your pain may increase while doing laborious work like lifting heavy objects and when your wrist is at extremes flexion and extended position.
How to diagnose?
During physical examination, examiner puts pressure on your cyst and test whether pain and discomfort occurs or not.
X-Ray, MRI and ultrasound can be done for further diagnosis
Sometimes the ganglion may be dispersed subcutaneously by firm local pressure.
Physical Therapy Treatment includes Ultrasound, LASER and Friction massage to reduce swelling and pain.

If conservative management fails or if it reoccurs then complete surgical excision of ganglion is to be done.
